Living in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental for almost a month makes us want to explore those beautiful mountains that we often saw from Center Mall where babe and I go for a jog. And it’s also the time for our monthly trek so we messaged our #dayhike buddies and invited them to come over to San Carlos City. Short research would easily point us to Mayana Peak, a famous #daytrek destination in San Carlos City so we set the date.

How to go to San Carlos City, Negros Occidental
From Cebu City
• Ride a Ceres bus going to Bacolod via Don Salvador (DBS) from Cebu City North Bus Terminal in SM City Cebu.
• There are daily trips: 2:30am, 4:30am, 7:00am, 9:50am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, 6:00pm, and 11:30pm.
• Cebu City to San Carlos City Ceres fare is between 360php to 400php including the ferry fare. (Always clarify with the Ceres kondoktor if fare includes ferry fare already)
• The total travel time Cebu City to San Carlos City bus and boat is 7 to 8 hours depending on traffic in Cebu. (boat travel time is 2 hours regular and 1 hour if fast craft)
• Drop off at San Carlos City bus Terminal.
From Bacolod City
• Ride a Ceres bus from Bacolod Ceres South Bus Terminal to San Carlos City.
• There are daily trips available. Make sure to ride the bus via Don Salvador (DBS)
• Ceres bus fare Bacolod to San Carlos City is 150.00php to 180.00php. (Depending if AC or not)
• Travel time is 3.5 to 4 hours via Don Salvador (DBS)
• Drop off at San Carlos City Bus Terminal.
From Dumaguete
• Ride a Ceres bus from Dumaguete City bus Terminal to San Carlos City.
• There are daily trips from 2:00 am with a 30-minute intervals.
• Ceres bus fare Dumaguete to San Carlos is 230.00php to 280.00php. (Depending if AC or not)
From Manila, other parts of Luzon and Mindanao
• Fly in to Bacolod – Silay Airport.
• Follow the route Bacolod to San Carlos City.

The place is easy to locate. A quick Google map direction would actually bring you to Mayana Peak. Sitio Mayana, barangay Rizal, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental is the complete address of this beautiful peak.
How to Go to Mayana Peak
From San Carlos City
• Ride a bus from San Carlos City Bus Terminal that is going to Bacolod via Don Salvador (DBS).
• Ask the kondoktor to drop you off at Sitio Punod, because you are going to Mayana Peak.
• Bus fare is around 35.00php. Travel time is 30 minutes.
• The junction is on the right side.
• Habal-habal is available and the fare is 120.00php to 150.00php per habal habal with a travel time of 20 to 30 minutes.
From Bacolod
• Ride a Ceres bus from Bacolod Ceres South Bus Terminal going to San Carlos City.
• Ask the kondoktor to drop you off at Sitio Punod, because you are going to Mayana Peak.
• The junction is on the left side.
• Habal-habal is available and the fare is 120.00php to 150.00php per habal habal with a travel time of 20 to 30 minutes.
Travel Tip
If the weather condition is okay (not raining hard) I highly recommend just walking from Sitio Punod Junction. It is just 2.6km or around a 45-minute walk. There is no registration fee but you are highly encouraged to hire a guide that just costs 100.00php for a group of 5. (Help local tourism by hiring guides)
About Mayana Peak
Mayana Peak is one of the astounding mountains in San Carlos City where you can have a 360-degree view of the gorgeous mountain ranges and ridges of San Carlos City and neighboring towns. Visit in the early morning to witness the glorious sunrise.
The highest point of the peak is at 715 masl and it is just 800m from the registration area. Going to the peak is a constant but easy ascend. An easy climb that can be done for beginners and even for first-time hikers.
On the top of the peak is a mini sarisari store that offers coffee, milk, pancit canton and other food snacks. They are the caretakers of the peak which we learned is a private mountain but the owners are good enough to share it with adventure seekers like us.
The route to Agtotonoy Peak from Mayana Peak
Since Mayana Peak is a short trek, you have an option to extend your adventure for just a few hours just like we did. Continue your #dayhike in San Carlos City to Agtotonoy Peak. You can ask your guide if you wanted to walk or your habal-habal driver if you wanted to ride.
The habal-habal ride would take you to a longer route but 30-minute travel. Walking on the other hand is just 1.5 to 2 hours of stunning scenery. The distance from the Mayana Peak registration area to Agtotonoy Peak via a walking route is around 1.5km.
It is an open field trail filled with walking on the side of hills and mountains. Another constant easy ascend but with an amazing view.
The only challenging part is the final ascent from the foot of the mountain to Agtotonoy peak. It is steep with loose soil and gets muddy when it rains but the view when you are on the top is remarkable. You can read the complete Agtotonoy Peak Guide here.
Travel Tip
• Bring a minimum of 500ml water and if possible, another 500 ml energy drink for each person.
• It is best to bring trail food or snacks if you opted to continue to Agtotonoy Peak.
• The trail from Mayana Peak to Agtotonoy Peak is an open trail so bring an umbrella or wear a cap.
• There are no tall grasses so you can just wear shorts.
