If you are a Filipino, for sure you are familiar with the rice terraces that are built by our ancestors. The rice terraces is one of the greatest old age engineering structure by our forefathers. As a child it is my dream to visit the Banaue Rice Terraces or in Filipino the Hagdan-hagdang Palayan and I cannot control my happiness when I first set my eyes on the ifugao rice terraces and that is the start for my love of rice terraces.

Tourism-wise, the Tegalalang rice terraces in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia is more famous than the rice terraces in the Philippines because the Ubud rice terraces is more accessible than the ones in the Philippines. But to all my foreign friends and readers, visiting the rice terraces in the Philippines is so worth it. And aside from the famous Philippines Banaue rice terraces in the mountain province of northern Luzon, there are now more accessible rice terraces with equally breathtaking view.

General Travel Tip

• Wear shoes or comfortable foot wear. You will be trekking and walking most of the time.
• The best time to visit:
  • Green fields – April to May and October to November
  • Gold fields – June and December
• Rainy seasons in the Philippines starts at July to January and most of the northern Luzon areas are prone to landslide.

Batad Rice Terraces

The rice terraces in Batad is known as the amphitheater-like terraces. It is built 2000 years ago. What differs it from others is that it is built with stone walls.

How to go to Batad Rice Terraces?

1. From Manila ride the Ohayami Trans, Coda/KMS, Florida. The station is near UST (Lacson Avenue cor. Fajardo Street). Bus fare is 470.00php. Travel time is 10 hours.
2. From Banaue.
   1000. You can either rent a roundtrip tricycle for 1000.00php good for 3 persons.
   1001. Ride a jeepney. Fare is 150.00php. No fix time so you have to ask the local to be able to catch the trip which is only twice a day.
   1002. You can walk. 3km uphill and another 3km downhill trek.

Travel Tip

1. Upon arrival in Banaue, pay environmental fee of 50.00php.
2. Another 50.00php environmental fee in Batad.
3. Transportation only stops at the saddle.
4. 40 minutes downhill trek to the village.

Banaue Rice Terraces

I encourage traveler not to skip the Banaue rice terraces. It has a breathtaking beauty of its own different from those of other terraces. Banaue has 5 lookout points and I enjoyed every view point.

How to go to Banaue Rice Terraces?

1. From Manila ride the Ohayami Trans, Coda/KMS, Florida. The station is near UST (Lacson Avenue cor. Fajardo Street). Bus fare is 470.00php. Travel time is 10 hours.
2. From Sagada to Banaue.
   45. Ride a jeepney from Sagada to Bontoc. Fare is 45.00php. Travel hour is 45 minutes. Jeepney schedule from 6:30am until 9:00am. Leaves every 30 minutes.
   46. From Bontoc you can hop in a van or jeepney to Banaue. Fare is 150.00php. Travel time is 203 hours. Van/Jeepney schedule 8:30am, 10:00am, and 1:00pm.

Travel Tip

1. Rent a tricyle for a Banaue – Hungduan Tour for 1,500.00php.
2. I forgot the name of our trike driver/ guide but see his photo below. He is quiet popular in Banaue because of his jolly character.

Bangaan Rice Terraces

Another highly encourage to visit terraces is the Bangaan Rice terraces.  It is the most accessible of the five UNESCO World Heritage terraces sites. Only 24 families live in the village.

2. From Banaue to Bangaan ride a jeep that goes to Mayoyao or hire a tricycle. Jeep Schedule is 2:00pm and 4:00pm

1. The best place if you want to stay on a traditional Ifugao Hut.

   2. Shop for native Ifugao souvenirs.
   3. Wear native Igorot Dress.

Mayoyao Rice Terraces

The Mayoyayo rice terraces is one of the UNESCO World Heritage rice terraces in the Philippines, but it is less visited due to its distant area.

How to go to Mayoyayo Rice Terraces?

1. From Manila to Mayoyao ride the Ohayami Trans, Coda/KMS, Florida. The station is near UST (Lacson Avenue cor. Fajardo Street). Bus fare is 500.00php – 600.00php. Travel time is 15 hours.
2. From Banaue to Mayayo wait for public transport at The Peoples Lodge. Fare is 90.00php.

Travel Tip

1. Mayoyao may also be the jump off if you want to climb Mt Amuyao, the 10th highest mountain in the Philippines.

Hungduan Rice Terraces

Hungduan came from the word “Hungdu” that means “to traverse through.” Long time ago, the place serves as the portal from one municipality to another like a place in Ifugao to Benguet.

2. From Banaue.

Nagacadan Rice Terraces

It is in Kiangan, Ifugao where you can find the Nagacadan Rice Terraces. Kiangan is the oldest town in Ifugao and believed to be the birthplace of Ifugao culture. The town’s name is rooted from the word “Kiyyangan” Which believes to be the home of Wigan and Bugan, the legendary ancestors in Ifugao folklore.

1. From Manila ride the Ohayami Trans that is bound to Lagawe. The station is near UST (Lacson Avenue cor. Fajardo Street). Bus fare is 420.00php. Daily trip at 9:30pm

Bohol Rice Terraces

If you find the northern Luzon out of your way or pretty far but you would love to see a rice terraces, then visiting Bohol is an option. There are several towns in Bohol that nests a beautiful rice terraces. They may not be as grand as the Ifugao rice terraces in the Cordillera but they are as equally beautiful.

Cadapdapan Rice Terraces

Cadapdapan rice terraces is found in Candijay, Bohol. It is one of the town in the eastern part of the province and one of the best places to visit in Bohol. Candijay is also one of the best Bohol tourist attractions.

How to go to Cadapdapan Rice Terraces?

1. From Tagbilaran City ride a bus or van in Dao Terminal. Bus fare is 80.00php, while van fare is 130.00php.
2. Inform the driver to drop you off at Lungsod Daan, Candijay Market.
3. Habal habal tour rate for 4-6 hours ranges from 180.00php – 200.00php.

Jagna Rice Terraces

The town of Jagna is best known for its sweet calamay. One of Bohols delicacy. But only few know that there is a hidden rice terraces in the mountainous barangay of Jagna particularly in Mayana.

How to go to Mayana Rice Terraces?

1. From Tagbilaran City to Jagna ride a bus or van in Dao Terminal. Bus fare is 60.00php, while van fare is 100.00php.
2. From Jagna public market to Mayana
   1. Ride the jeepney. There is only 1 schedule.
   2. Ride a habal-habal. The quickest transportation to Mayana. Fare is 100.00php/person for one way. You can ask the driver to wait for you.

Travel Tip

1. The best way to view the rice terraces is if you climb Mayana Peak, which is also the highest peak in Bohol.
2. Aside from the calamay in Jagna try also the flower shape cookies.

Lila Rice Terraces

Lila is 28.5km from Tagbilaran City. The rice terraces in Lila Bohol is the most accessible among all rice terraces because it is just situated along the road in barangay Tiguis, Lila, Bohol.

How to go to Lila Rice Terraces?

1. From Tagbilaran City to Lila go to Dao Terminal and ride a jeepney or bus going to Lila. Fare is 20.00php.
2. Ask the bus boy (The person who asks for your fare) to drop you at Tiguis, Lila in the Marcela Inc. hatcheries.
3. Tiguis Rice Terraces is beside the hatchery and few steps across the hatchery.

Travel Tip

1. Seat in the left side of the bus or jeep so that you can view the Tourism signage of the Tiguis Rice Terraces in Lila, Bohol.

Sierra Bullones Rice Terraces

Sierra Bullones is 44km away from Tagbilaran City and is found in the southern part and interior part of Bohol. In this super laid back town sleeps one of Bohols finest rice terraces.
